Combating Disinformation

Disinformation may be the single greatest threat to the health of our democracy. When Americans can’t agree on a set of facts, it becomes impossible to resolve disputes and move forward. As we have seen in the past three elections, disinformation – both foreign and domestic – has had a detrimental impact on the perceived legitimacy of our elections. While respecting the First Amendment, we must combat disinformation.

If elected, Dan would work to make it a crime to intentionally spread false information about elections, including when, where, and how people can vote. We must also incentivize schools to teach media literacy and how to identify questionable sources of information and misinformation. We must hold tech companies more accountable by requiring social media platforms to disclose their algorithms so independent watchdogs can provide much-needed oversight.
